a visit to the colorado symphony
I visited the Colorado Symphony with my father this past weekend to see Beethoven Symphony no. 8 and a couple other pieces. I was inspired by the performance space the most. The spiral-like circular room that served as the culmination point for all the nicely-dressed people in a wide range of ages was warm and filled with excitement. The lighting was soft and made the instruments glow. Red velvet cushions as a part of wood-backed seats created a comfortable but luxurious experience. These people had all set aside a couple of hours of their day, wrapping around the stage and filling up the space, all agreeing to be a part of the experience of feeling music live. It felt very inviting, and incredibly conductive for acoustics and physically experiencing the music.
I was inspired as well by the music itself, and the people playing the instruments. It amazes me that so many people still come to watch and listen to such beautiful music, written by people who existed almost 300 years ago. Classical music is such a beautiful way of connecting humanity across centuries with almost the same experience. The world may change, and music may change too, but some symphonies stay the same.
